Madame Taconeo

Two clusters of legs evoke stamping feet, energy, and an intense rhythm and sound. Inspired by the dancer La Singla, this work pays tribute to the great masters of the “taconeo”, the art of heel-beats in flamenco: a poetic paradox in solid wood. The bench, an object static by definition, takes on another symbolic meaning here; it is a seat impatient to move, in search of feeling, and to celebrate life by stamping its feet.

A word on the design

Huub told us where it came from before the first line was drawn: a documentary about a flamenco dancer had stayed with him, the frenzy of her steps lodged somewhere inside. That instinct echoed an idea Tristan had explored months earlier in the atelier, during the R&D phase: a seat that multiplies its legs and sets them in motion, without Huub knowing anything about it. Not a coincidence of drawing, then, but a meeting of intentions. The piece asserted itself.

The first prototype was already very close, but once again it took hands-on trials in the atelier, several settings for the thickness of the legs, down to the single half-millimetre that finally made the whole thing right.

That prototype is also what made us fall in love with colour. In love with solid wood as we were, we had barely explored tinted oils until then. Flamenco made us want a touch of fire: we spent a long time working out how to bring in a very vivid red without betraying the ecological nature of our oils, or the transparency of the wood beneath the tint. That red exceeded everything we hoped for; it has since written colour into the DNA of B.fabers.
