Beauty, a living legacy

From the very beginning, B.fabers has linked the artisan's hand and the designer's drawing. Our role is close to that of a publisher: bringing designers and independent artisans together around a shared method, a shared material and a shared philosophy.

Designer and artisans work directly together: the drawing feeds on the hand at work. Our designers draw on the craftsmanship of the artisans in the community to imagine furniture that is sturdy, repairable and true to local solid wood. Traditional joinery, without a single screw, is essential to this: it gives each piece its structure, its honesty and its ability to last.

Our furniture is built to last more than a century. A designer who knows this does not draw for passing fashion, but for a form that will last as long as the wood.

Our model rests on one simple conviction. No B.fabers object exists without three people meeting around the same inspiration:

the designer, the craftsman-maker and the person it is made for. Take any one of the three away, and the object does not exist.

To set out to make objects that get handed down is to set the bar very high. It takes a true form, design and making without compromise, pieces that are sturdy and repairable. But a piece can be aesthetic without being beautiful. To become beautiful, it needs depth: what we know about it. We grow attached to what we know, and that bond is what makes us keep a piece, then hand it down.

That bond grows out of a true material, from a tree whose origin we know, and out of the people who gave it form. Bringing all of that together takes a collective, skills that answer one another, and encounters. This is how the Fabers method came about.

A solid wood piece shaped by an artisan is always one of a kind. Its grain, its knots and its natural tones give it a character entirely its own. By entrusting a single design to several independent artisans, we let each artisan sign their own series.

Our pieces are made in small series, numbered and signed by both the designer and the artisan.

An exacting specification guarantees consistent quality, and each artisan leaves the mark of their own hand.

Working with independent, exacting talents means accepting that the piece sometimes goes on living in their hands. Though it forms no part of the brief, some of them propose adjustments or variations that extend the original gesture, driven by their passion and their eye.

Working with independent artisans means supporting ateliers that also keep a close eye on their impact on the environment and on society.

Every piece is made to order: nothing waits in a warehouse, it is your order that puts the artisan to work.

We work exclusively in solid wood from French species: chosen and felled in the forest by the artisan himself, or bought from sawmills our artisans have chosen for their practices, careful about how the forest is managed and about tracing where each cut comes from. A certificate of authenticity comes with every piece and states where its wood comes from.

Solid wood is alive. It moves with the seasons, takes on a patina, gets marked, keeps the trace of those who live with it. A shrinkage crack or a slight bow is part of its life: our joints are designed for it. And so much the better: this is how, year after year, a piece becomes yours. From one artisan to another, gestures and tools leave nuances: the signature of a hand.

Your piece may differ slightly from the images on the site: that is the nature of solid wood.

Because every piece is made to order, it can be neither returned nor exchanged. We do allow a window of 48 hours after the order in which you are free to change your mind.
