Nescio
With three drawers, Nescio gains rhythm and assurance. Suspended, it remains in between, but its drawing repeats itself, settles, asserts a clearer presence. Nescio was also the pen name of a Dutch writer who preferred to work behind a mask, publishing under it to protect his professional life. That way of being discreet while being highly exact resonates in this more assertive version, and yet one still full of restraint.

From the first sketch, in that café, we knew Huub was drawing on Donald Judd's work, on his wall shelves and his stacks. We understood immediately what he meant by proposing a Nescio without a leg, so much so that, for once, we may have had the same piece in mind before ever seeing his drawing. All that was left was to see it exist, and to look for the wood and the finish that were right for it.
The softness and restraint of ash, lightly whitened with oil, felt obvious: a fine grain, a quiet presence. This version stakes everything on the purity of its lines. Like every piece born of a community of talents, it stays alive: a fresh eye, a new skill or a new gesture can always move it on, towards another version or a variation no one has seen yet. Judd's minimalism, for all its apparent bareness, gave colour a great deal of room, and that thread keeps inspiring us.
