Nescio, 2-drawer wall console

2-drawer wall console

Nescio

Nescio, Latin for “I do not know”, finds here a form that suits it: two drawers only, a restrained presence, upright, almost suspended. Closer to a shelf than to a console, it advances with a deliberate sobriety, without seeking to occupy the room. A precise piece, sure of its line, yet willingly held back in its function.

This shorter version came about almost at the same time as the three-drawer: the silhouette of Nescio was already carrying us, and the drawing arrived just as quickly. Only the symmetry shifts register, tighter now, for different interiors.

It was the material we lingered over this time. The artisans already knew wild cherry; it was with this piece that Huub and Tristan discovered its full beauty, long hidden under a dark varnish — a reflex of fashion rather than of reason. Its colour, somewhere between honey and brown-pink, deepens into a rich patina over time; its fine grain and coppery highlights give it a quiet elegance.

Since then, wild cherry has joined many of our proposals, simply oiled. And as early as the show at Wilde, one of our Nescio pieces was displayed entirely raw — the only piece in the collection in that state — to reveal that beauty exactly as it is.
